A workshop and discussion on the modern-day relevance of “The National Question.” June 30, 2023 at Midnight Books LA, in Whittier, CA
An important point that was raised during the course of the lively discussion, but perhaps not clearly enough stated in the opening presentation: Because national oppression is fundamental to imperialism, this means that all resistance to that oppression is by nature, counter to the interests of the colonizer/oppressor.
If the proletariat of the oppressed nationality is in leadership, the demands of specific struggles, even as they include a variety of nationalities, can be inclusive of the interests of the majority of all working-class peoples. If led by oppressed nationality proletariat, they will generally have a foundational component of resistance to national oppression, and therefore, include an anti-imperialist character.
We must fight for democratic processes in various organizations and campaigns, so that the voices of working-class people, particularly working-class oppressed nationalities, and especially women, can be allowed to play a leading role.
Supporting the struggles of oppressed peoples, and the right of self-determination including the right to secession of oppressed nations should be central, not secondary, to anyone who is interested in doing away with imperialism.
Regardless of what class or gender of the oppressed nationality that resistance is originating from, or what specific form that resistance is taking, it is objectively, anti-imperialist.
To build a stronger and more effective mass movement, lifting up the humanity of oppressed peoples must be central in the work of any activist interested in doing away with imperialism.
